Access is the biggest one nobody expects. If a digger can reach the wall line, the job is straightforward. If everything has to come through a side gate in a wheelbarrow, labour goes up sharply. A machine that fits a standard gate is around a tonne, and it changes the price a lot.
After that comes ground conditions, how far spoil has to travel, whether we are working around existing services, and how many corners and steps there are. A straight 20m run prices far better per metre than four short walls at different angles.
On an engineered wall, expect engineering fees and council consent fees on top of the build. Nationally these commonly run into the low thousands each, and Christchurch is not cheap for either. Add processing time as well, since council has 20 working days from a complete application and incomplete applications stall.
