Rangiora is the Waimakariri District seat
The district council offices are in Rangiora, and building consents for the whole district are processed here. Waimakariri must process a complete application within 20 working days, and payments can be made in person at the Rangiora, Kaiapoi or Oxford service centres.
The retaining wall rules themselves come from the Building Act, so they match Christchurch. The difference is fees and process, and we deal with all of that.

Town sections and lifestyle blocks side by side
Rangiora has both. Around the town centre the jobs are ordinary suburban walls, usually 600mm to 1.2m, holding a level change between properties. Out toward Ashley, Fernside and Loburn there are lifestyle blocks with long runs and plenty of room to work.
Timber pole walls do most of this work. On the rural properties, crib and gabion walls suit better because they can be planted and they look like part of the landscape rather than an addition.
North Canterbury weather and the wall
Rangiora gets the nor'west wind coming off the plains and hard rain events that follow it. Neither hurts a wall directly, but heavy rain is exactly when a drainage system either works or does not.
Check your drain coil outlet after a big rain and clear it if it has silted. That five minute check is the whole maintenance schedule for most walls we build.
Not sure whether your wall needs a consent? Send us a photo and a rough height. Under 1.5m of retained ground with nothing loading it from above is exempt. A driveway, a building, a pool or fill sloping up behind it is a surcharge, and that changes the answer.
