Retaining Wall Builders in Christchurch
Top Retaining Walls Christchurch builds retaining walls across the city and the wider Canterbury area. Timber pole and sleeper walls, concrete block, poured concrete, gabion baskets, crib and segmental systems, boundary walls between new subdivision lots, and engineered walls that need a producer statement. We do the earthworks, the drainage, the wall and the backfill as one job rather than three trades pointing at each other.

Four quick questions. Most quotes come back within a couple of days.
Two things separate a wall that lasts thirty years from one that is leaning in five, and neither of them is the timber or the block. The first is drainage, because water building up behind a wall is what actually pushes it over. The second is whether anyone worked out what the wall is really holding back before they priced it. On a Christchurch hill section that means understanding loess. On the flat it means understanding what is sitting on top.
The retaining walls we build in Christchurch, and when each one is right
There is no best retaining wall. There is the wall that suits the height, the ground, the load above it and what you want to look at, and the sensible answer changes street by street.
Timber pole and sleeper
The most common residential wall in Canterbury and usually the cheapest at $400 to $800 per square metre of wall face. H5 treated posts set in concrete with H4 sleepers between them. Good to about 1.2 metres without engineering, quick to build, and it looks right on a garden boundary. Its weakness is that the posts are the only thing resisting the load, so spacing, embedment and drainage all have to be right.
Concrete block
Laid on a reinforced footing with vertical starter bars up through the cores, grout filled. $700 to $1,500 per square metre. Stronger, longer lasting, and the sensible choice once you are over a metre or carrying a driveway above. MBIE's Canterbury guidance found engineered block walls generally performed well through the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, and propped or buttressed ones did better again than pure cantilevers.
Poured concrete
A monolithic cantilever wall on a wide reinforced footing. The most expensive and the strongest, and the usual answer where the wall is holding a house platform or a driveway on a steep site. Finished off form, board formed, plastered or faced in stone.
Gabion
Wire baskets filled with rock, $500 to $900 per square metre. They drain freely through the face, which removes the water problem entirely, and they flex rather than crack. That flexibility is why they perform well in a seismic zone. They suit rural boundaries, larger banks and anywhere the look is meant to be rugged.
How retaining wall cost is worked out, and what sits inside the price
Retaining walls are priced per square metre of wall face, which is length times retained height rather than length alone. A 10 metre wall at 1.2 metres is 12 square metres. In Christchurch that runs $400 to $3,500 per square metre depending entirely on what it is holding, with most projects landing between $700 and $1,500.
What moves the number most
Height first, because everything scales with it: bigger footing, deeper posts, more steel, and past 1.5 metres an engineer and a consent. Then access, because a hill section where everything is barrowed costs more than a flat Rolleston site a truck can reverse onto. Then what sits above the wall, since a driveway or a building is a surcharge and changes the design completely.
What is included here and often excluded elsewhere
Drainage, backfill metal, geotextile and compaction are part of our quote, not an extra line discovered later. Engineering, geotechnical reports and council fees we quote separately and at cost, because they are third party charges and we would rather you see them clearly.
Retaining wall building consent: the two traps in the rule
Under Schedule 1 of the Building Act a retaining wall is exempt from building consent if it retains no more than 1.5 metres of ground and supports no surcharge. Both halves have to be true, and both halves catch people out.
It is depth of ground, not wall height
The 1.5 metres is measured from the ground level on the lower side up to the retained ground above. On a sloping section that is often not the same as the height of the structure you can see, and it can change along the length of one wall.
Surcharge catches more people than height
A surcharge is any load beyond the weight of the ground itself. A driveway. A car parked at the top. A deck or a building footing. Sloping ground above the wall. Any of those and the exemption is gone even at a metre. Terraced walls are caught too, because two or more close together are assessed as one combined structure.
Getting this wrong is not a paperwork problem. Building without a consent you needed is an offence under section 40 of the Building Act carrying a maximum fine of $200,000, and it surfaces when you sell.
Where our retaining wall builders work across Canterbury
All of Christchurch city, the Port Hills from Cashmere round through Huntsbury, Mount Pleasant and Sumner to Lyttelton, and out across the flat through Riccarton, Halswell, Wigram and Papanui.
We also cover the growth districts, because a large share of this work now sits there. Selwyn has been the fastest growing district in the country, up 29 percent between the 2018 and 2023 censuses, and Rolleston has gone from about 1,500 residents in the 1990s to over 34,000. Almost every new lot on a graded platform needs a boundary wall.

Retaining Wall Builders in Christchurch: common questions
How much does a retaining wall cost in Christchurch?
Between $400 and $3,500 per square metre of wall face, with most projects landing $700 to $1,500. A typical 10 metre by 1.2 metre wall is usually $5,000 to $12,000 depending on type, access and what sits above it.
Do I need a building consent?
Not if the wall retains 1.5 metres of ground or less and supports no surcharge. If there is a driveway, a building, a parked car or sloping ground above it, you do, whatever the height.
How long does a retaining wall take to build?
A straightforward timber wall under 1.5 metres is usually two to four days on site. Block and poured concrete take longer because of footing cure times. Consented work adds the council processing period before anything starts.
Which wall type should I choose?
It depends on height, what sits above it and access more than on preference. We price the two or three that genuinely suit your site rather than quoting one and calling it the answer.
Do you handle the engineering and the consent?
Yes. We bring in the engineer, get the PS1, lodge the consent and provide the PS4 at the end. You are not left chasing three parties.
How do I choose between retaining wall builders in Christchurch?
Ask three questions and the field narrows fast. First, is drainage in the quote or an optional extra, because water is what pushes walls over and a builder who treats it as a variation is telling you something. Second, have they told you whether the wall needs a building consent, or have they left that for you to discover. Third, if the existing wall could be repaired rather than replaced, will they price both. A builder who only ever quotes the bigger job is not giving you a choice.
What should be included in a retaining wall quote?
Excavation, the wall itself, drainage pipe, drainage metal, geotextile, backfill placed and compacted in layers, and removal of spoil. Ours also names the wall type, the retained height it is designed for and what sits above it, because those three things are what the price actually depends on. Engineering, geotechnical investigation and council fees are shown separately and at cost, because they are third party charges rather than ours.
How long will my retaining wall last?
A timber wall with H5 posts and working drainage will give you thirty years. The same wall with H4 posts and no drainage gives five to ten, and the difference in build cost is small. Reinforced concrete block and poured concrete are effectively permanent structures provided the drainage keeps working, which is why the outlet matters as much as the steel. Gabion life comes down to the wire rather than the rock.
Do you work with builders and landscapers, or only homeowners?
Both. A meaningful share of our work is subcontract retaining for group home builders and landscape companies, particularly boundary walls on subdivision lots where the platform levels have to be resolved before the house goes up. We supply the same documentation either way: PS1, consent, inspection records and PS4 where the wall is consented work.
Recent Christchurch jobs
Boundary wall between us and the neighbour on a new build. Sorted the levels, the consent question and the fence on top in one job. Turned up when they said and left the site clean every night.
Builder here. I use them on subdivision work because the paperwork comes back complete. PS1 up front, PS4 at the end, no chasing.
Wall failed after the big rain and took part of the bank with it. Made safe within two days and rebuilt a month later with real drainage behind it.
Terraced the back lawn into two levels. Fast, tidy, fair price, and the drainage was done properly.
